Open this section ↗A fire commissioner is an elected member of the board that governs a Washington fire protection district. Acting together at public meetings, commissioners set policy and service priorities, adopt budgets, oversee district resources and contracts, and appoint and supervise the fire chief. The chief and crews manage daily operations and emergency response; individual commissioners do not direct incidents.
Commissioners must be registered voters who live in the district. Candidates file for a numbered position, and district voters elect each seat. Regular full terms last six years and are staggered, so the entire board does not change at once. Vacancies are filled under Washington law.
